What former mentees are saying. . .

"Having Rosie J. Pova as a mentor was worth every penny. Her constructive feedback, encouragement, and infectious enthusiasm allowed me to produce three polished manuscripts and queries. Her knowledge of the craft set me on a positive path. Based on years of experience, she shared many important insights into the writing business. Rosie’s love of the children for whom she writes, shines through--and she’s willing to pass it on."  —Virginia B.

"Writing Picture Books: From Creation to Publication class taught by Rosie J. Pova has been my favorite writing class.... Through the lessons and assignments, Rosie provided clear instruction on how to develop characters, story plot and questions to think about when drafting your children book stories. Rosie created a safe environment where all the students felt encouraged and as a result, the students motivated each other." --Christy A.

How did this workshop help you grow as a writer?

I think that being in person, writing one-on-one with no other distractions was very helpful to me. I am a working mom and is hard to find uninterrupted blocks of time where I can work on my career as a children’s writer. I grew in every area: my editing skills, formatting, my comfort level of being silly when reading out loud, creativity in my writing, trusting my own imagination, I have a clear picture of my next realistic steps to grow.

What did you find most valuable?

Hard to answer this one, Rosie! I think having your uninterrupted attention on growing me as a writer! You and I had so many hours working on my craft, talking me through every step of the way. You have 16+ years of experience in this industry and are very successful.  Honestly, the most valuable thing about the weekend was our uninterrupted hours and hours we spent talking, critiquing, Q&A sessions… working on me. I am so thankful and fortunate.

Would you recommend it to other writers?

100% YES!

What would you say to someone who is considering working with me as their writing coach?

Whoever can get your undivided attention to coach them for a full weekend should consider themselves unbelievably lucky and JUMP at the opportunity. You would not regret it at all. I learned so much and it was an incredibly fulfilling weekend for me. I enjoyed every minute of our time this past weekend together.

Testimonial:

"My choice to work with Rosie Pova was the BEST decision ever. I researched a lot of classes. I researched so many options online and ultimately decided to work with Rosie at the Writers Workshop of Dallas. Her class gave me the tools, the foundation, the skills, and outlined exactly what I needed to do to succeed. She invested her time in me, most importantly, she believed in me. It took time for me to prove to her and show her my dedication and passion for writing. But she stuck with me, she worked with me, and she really took me from not having a clue what to do… to being very close to being published. And not only with one story… but with six stories. I think that alone speaks volumes to Rosie and the value I got out of working with her. I am forever grateful to her for her time, wisdom, knowledge, and encouragement on this journey. It’s been a wild ride… and I’m just getting started!"

DESCRIPTIONS OF PRESENTATIONS:

#1: Dear Author: This Is Why I Rejected Your Manuscript

Description: Learn from an editor the many reasons why picture book manuscripts get rejected – some of which you can address in your writing and pitches, some of which are entirely out of your hands. We all get rejected – now learn the real reason why!

#2: Inside the Publisher’s Office: How Your Book Gets Acquired, Developed, and Sold
Description: What happens when your agent submits your manuscript? And what happens after it gets accepted? Go behind the scenes of one of the “Big Five” publishers and learn how a book moves from manuscript to book store shelves.

#3: What's Your Picture Book Hook?
Description: What is a "hook" in your manuscript? And why do you need one? Learn why it’s not enough to just write a nice story: What is the unique detail about your manuscript that will catch the eye of agents, editors, sales reps, book sellers, librarians, and ultimately your customer? Does your story have enough to stand out in a crowded market? Is your elevator pitch effective? We’ll talk about the kinds of hooks the publishing industry looks for and will look at recent picture books to examine what details might have given them an edge.
